By Charles & Tina Parker

In our next instalment of Meet the Author, we meet Charles and Tina Parker.

Charles and Tina are the authors of the Tell It As It Is series. They have extensive knowledge of autism, dating back over 22 years whilst caring for both sons who are on the spectrum.

In their new book, Tell It As It Is: My New Home, they share their journey to help their son Christopher, who has severe autism, enter a new phase of his life: supported living. This will enable him to (almost) live independently.

Describe the book in less than 30-50 words.

An informative guide to Supported Living to give an insight into some of the many challenges that we have had to cope with. It is written with the specific aim of helping those on the spectrum to live independent lives and to ensure they have freedom of choice, which is so often badly lacking.

Why did you want to write this book?

Having already written two books, we knew there was something missing from the journey, probably the most important part for many who need to know more about the way they could improve their lives and embrace a realistic opportunity to have an element of independence.

Who is your book aimed at?

Anyone who loves reading but more specifically anyone who is on the spectrum or those who work within the social industry, carers, and social workers so that they may have a better understanding.

What is your vision for the book?

To help promote a better understanding throughout the world of autism and in particular help those that are just starting on the long journey that we have travelled thus far. We feel there is not enough help given to those with autism as they reach adulthood.

What is your favourite book and why?

For me, Charles, it has to be the series of books by James Herriot.  Having been brought up in a farming environment, without electric gas and mains water until I was 12, and my love for animals, it immediately gave me the urge to follow Herriot on his travels around Yorkshire farms.

For Tina, an avid reader, it has always been the many books of Catherine Cookson that she enjoys most.
