In this month’s Brilliant Byte, Zara shares what should be ‘In’ and ‘Out’ for authors in 2024…

As the new year begins, many people set resolutions and goals for the year ahead. However, research shows that most of these resolutions last just 3.74 months.

As people evaluate their goals, social media has been filled with many sharing what they consider to be ‘in’ and ‘out’ for 2024 – what they want more of, and what they want less of.

Book Brilliance Publishing has compiled a guide of what’s ‘in’ and ‘out’ to assist you in becoming a successful authorpreneur in 2024.

Out: “I can’t” attitude / Fixed Mindset

In: “I can” attitude / Growth Mindset

A fixed mindset is a negative state of mind that can lead to giving up easily, avoiding challenges, and not believing in oneself. “Why bother contacting my local newspaper about my book? They won’t want to feature it.”

On the other hand, a growth mindset is a positive state of mind that encourages perseverance and a willingness to keep trying, even in the face of obstacles.

A growth mindset is essential for authorpreneurs. You’ll understand that it’s normal to face rejection and setbacks, but you’ll be willing to keep trying until you achieve your goals.

Make it your goal this year to approach your local bookshops, media outlets and libraries to ensure they know about you and your book.

Even if some say no, keep trying until you find those who say yes.

Out: Shying away from social media

In: Engaging with the #AuthorCommunity

Being an author can be a lonely experience, and it is normal to feel isolated and not have anyone to talk to about the author journey.

This year, make it your goal to engage with the #AuthorCommunity.

You can find them on platforms like Twitter and Instagram, often using the #AuthorCommunity or #AuthorLife hashtags. Reach out to them for advice or tips or try to connect with local authors for a regular coffee and chat.

Consider joining online writing groups, forums, or social media communities to network with other writers. Building relationships with fellow writers can provide you with valuable insights, support, and potential collaboration opportunities.

Out: Marketing in dribs and drabs

In: Marketing consistently

Becoming a successful author is not an overnight story. It can take years of hard work to hone your craft and sell your books effectively.

Make it your goal this year to market your books consistently. Have you heard of the Marketing Rule of 7? This is a marketing principle which suggests that a potential buyer must see your product or message at least seven times before taking action, i.e. buying your book.

To find your intended readers, you need to know where they hang out. Do they use a particular social media platform? Platforms like Twitter and Instagram have large book communities, such as #BookTwitter and #Bookstagram. Identify the book influencers in your genre who can help you to reach your audience.

Make it your goal to engage with your readers. Share behind-the-scenes insights, run competitions, and answer their questions about book writing. By building genuine connections with your audience, you can foster loyalty and increase engagement.

Good luck with your author journey in 2024!
